SING WITH THE CAROLINA MASTER CHORALE

Welcome to the 44th season of the Carolina Master Chorale!

Here you will find information which will help you to know a little more about the CMC, who to ask in case of questions, and how to make your singing experience with the Chorale fulfilling and fun.

Carolina Master Chorale (CMC)

The Carolina Master Chorale is a large, auditioned, volunteer choir, and membership is open to singers of all ages and voice types. The Chorale rehearses on Thursday evenings, from 7-9:30 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach (from mid-August to April). The Chorale performs four concerts each season, in addition to collaborations with other local arts organizations, including annual Messiah performances every December, and a choral-orchestral masterwork performance each spring with the Long Bay Symphony.

CMC Chamber Ensemble

As CMC begins its 44th Season, we are expanding our choral offerings! In addition to performing in the Carolina Master Chorale, singers can now audition for our new small group. The CMC Chamber Ensemble will represent the chorale at community events and paid gigs and perform as an independent Chamber Ensemble at our regular-season concerts. Singers in this ensemble will be expected to learn and prepare music on their own (outside of rehearsal) and serve as musical leaders within the larger Chorale. This is a project-based group composed of singers from the Carolina Master Chorale. *Not all singers on the roster will need to perform at every event.

Additional rehearsal times may be added for this ensemble based on the performance schedule. These rehearsals will typically take place before or after the regular CMC rehearsal on Thursday evenings. Depending on the event, additional rehearsal days may be added. This information will be shared on a gig-by-gig basis.

Those interested in being included on the CMC small-group roster should sign up for both a regular CMC audition AND a Chamber Ensemble Audition. Additional audition materials will be required for this separate ensemble and are included below. Carolina Master Chorale Audition Information

Season Audition Sessions (Group Format): This year, auditions will be done in a group setting, to better emulate the choral experience. Singers will sign up for a 50-minute audition time slot based on their voice-part and sing together in a group of no more than 20 singers. Dr. Cossey will lead the group in some vocal exercises to assess the section and evaluate range and singer flexibility, rehearse the required excerpt (along with our fantastic accompanist, D Scott), and, if time, teach a short excerpt of a new piece for the fall concert.

This audition is meant to more accurately evaluate singers in the way they will actually be performing––in the group setting. It will also give singers a "first look" at what rehearsals will feel like in the coming year. This process is set-up to be as welcoming and safe as possible. No one will be asked to sing alone, unless they are comfortable doing so, and returning members can be assured their space in the ensemble is secure. This is an opportunity to hear all singers, new and returning, and begin making plans for the year ahead.

Audition Details & Requirements:

  • All interested singers must complete an online audition intake form and sign up for one 50-minute time block (dates and times below)
  • Each session can accommodate up to 20 singers (on specified voice parts)
  • Singers interested in singing in the Carolina Master Chorale will need to prepare the following excerpt:
  • In the group setting, the Artistic Director will vocalize with the group, hear the required audition excerpt, listen to voice pairings and individual singers, and teach a portion of a new piece to the group. If needed, additional one-on-one auditions may be scheduled.
